![]() Today four Cadets, from the Fox Cities Composite Squadron, competed in round I of CyberPatriot, a cyber defense competition for high school age students sponsored by the Air Force Association. There are two divisions- All Service, which includes CAP and JROTC cadets and the Open Division, which is for individual high school teams. The cadets/students learn about information assurance and security and then have to defend a server against a simulated attack. The attacks included viruses, trojans, and hacking attempts. They have to repel the attacks and harden the operating system against further attacks while maintaining availability of service (ex. a web server needs to keep serving web pages). --- UPDATE 27 Oct 2010 --- Congratulations to the FCCS team! This past Saturday the FCCS CyberPatriot Team competed in the first round of the CyberPatriot competition. Out of 661 teams in the All Services Division (JROTC and CAP) they placed high enough to get a bye for Round 2 and proceed directly to Round 3. This means they placed in the top 16 of the 150 CAP teams nationally and in the top 34 overall nationally! No other Wisconsin Wing team got a bye, and only two other teams in Great Lakes Region received a bye. Congratulations to Cadets Donte Hall, Nick Sosinski, Zachary Hoffmann, and Bryce Sullivan for their performance in Round 1. Cadets Caitlin Jackson, Mitchell Lichtenwald, and Matt Hackett are on the team as well, but were unable to compete in this round. Also a thank you to Major Terrance Schmitt the team coach and mentor. On 12-14 November the Fox Cites Composite Squadron will be holding a Field Training Exercise (FTX) at High Cliff State Park. This training event is open to all cadet and senior members, the cost to attend will be $10. The FTX will consist of a variety of activities including, emergency services training, teamwork building, and wilderness survival instruction. It is hoped we will be able to secure a mission number for this event, which would count towards one of the two missions required for an emergency services rating (ex: ground team member). We will depart from the Squadron at 1800 and will transport as many people as possible in the CAP van, but some individuals will need to take personally owned vehicles. The FTX will conclude at 1300 on Sunday the 14th at which time we will transport back to the squadron. There will be a U-Haul trailer at the squadron which will be available to transport your personal gear and other materials need for the Field Training Exercise to and from the park. Start and end times are tentative and subject to change as the final schedule for this training is worked out. Please review the attached equipment list, items marked with an asterisk are available from the squadron in limited supply and will be issued on a first come first serve basis for this activity.
Helicopters in Aerospace Education 08/20/2010
During the Tuesday, August 16, 2010, meeting of Fox Cities Composite Squadron cadets had the opportunity to learn about the part the rudder, aileron and flaps play in keeping a plane in flight as part of their Aerospace Education instruction. The class was taught by Lt Col Pete Boulanger, the squadron's Aerospace Technology Officer. Lt Col Boulanger then had the Cadets creat their own helicopters to test the information that was learned. The completed vehicles were then taken outside to test out their flying capabilities. Helicpters were released several times, with a few modifications after the launches to repair equipment. Civil Air Patrol Members Respond to Accident 08/03/2010
On Wednesday July 28th, Fox Cities Composite Squadron members, driving north on Hwy 41 after a busy day working the National EAA Recruiting Booth, came upon an overturned vehicle in the ditch. The single vehicle accident had happened just moments before. A passerby who witnessed the accident called 911 while Captain Robert Koehler, Captain Kurt Lichtenwald, Second Lieutenant Linda Sanchez-Reid, Senior Member Connie Lichtenwald and Cadet Second Lieutenant Mitchell Lichtenwald implemented their training to assess the situation, assist the victim, and provide crowd control until emergency personnel arrived. Luckily, the vehicle driver while disorientated did not appear seriously injured. Also assisting at the scene was a United States Army combat medic who had been attached to an Air Force Security Unit in Iraq. Emergency response personnel from Winnebago County arrived quickly at the scene. Summer Field Training Exercise 07/19/2010
On 16 and 17 July the Fox Cities Composite Squadron conducted a field training exercise at Calumet County Park. The Park provided a basic structure with only electricity. This allowed the participants a valuable opportunity to complete the training with minimal technology; a lap top with preloaded forms and a printer. Two training scenarios were utilized; a downed aircraft and missing person. Both missions were accomplished through collaboration between Fox Cities’ aircraft and ground team members. The training was to last through Sunday; however the threat of severe weather forced the mission to conclude early Saturday evening. A great team effort was made by all participants at this self funded training mission so thanks to the outstanding IC, Mission Staff, Aircrew, Ground Team Leaders, Ground Team Participants and SET Examiners. Fox Cities Composite Squadron would like to thank Calumet County Park for their continued support of our training missions.
